Rick Graduates from High Point Regional High School

Rick spent his Senior Year of High School at High Point Regional High School in Sussex NJ. He graduated June 2005 with good grades and he is a sophomore at  Rugters, The State University of New Jersey. He is a Political Science Major and enjoying College.

The Gow School

This is my son Rick (2001 to 2004). Rick spent 3 years at The Gow School.   He did an excellent job with mostly A's and B's, Rick made Honor Roll and was inducted into the National Honors Society and received the Norman and Vesta Howard Scholarship Award, presented to that student who through his talents, perseverance and will to succeed represents the highest levels of achievement at Gow (Above Right, receiving the award from Vesta Howard and Headmaster William Patterson).  I also went to the Gow School for grades10 to 12 (1968 to 1971). As Rick finished 8th grade I saw that Rick had some of the same dyslexic problem that I have...We went to the Gow School to have him tested on 6-27-01 and sure enough they found that he too had dyslexia.  On 7-02-01 Rick was accepted at the Gow School which was his first choice!  The Gow  School that I graduated from  35 years ago made a huge difference in my life and it has for Rick too!

The Gow School celebrates its 75th year
The Gow School was founded by Peter Gow Jr. in 1926. Peter Gow graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale at nineteen and taught at Choate. He left Choate and for the next 20 years taught at the Nichols School in Buffalo, where he meet his wife and had five daughters (one named Vesta) and a son David. Peter Gow was very interested why intelligent boys had difficulty with English and foreign languages. He felt that small classes and intensive drill could help correct the problem. He wanted to be his own boss and see if his ideas would work. In 1926 he moved his family to South Wales, NY., a small farming community south of Buffalo and started converting a farm in to a boarding school for boys. A horse barn became the Main building (my senior year dorm). Shortly after starting the school he meet Dr. Samuel T. Orton of New York - a brilliant neurologist who had been working on specific language disability. He felt students with reading difficulties should respond well to a phonetic approach. Peter Gow took this approach and developed RL (Reconstructive Language), a structured approach to rebuild the foundation of language providing regular exposure to the interaction with verbal and written language. In 1935 Norman Howard joined the Gow School as a teacher. He had come to teach for a year or two, but married the boss's daughter and stayed for a life time. In 1937 Norman married Peter Gow's daughter Vesta. Norman Howard became Assistant Headmaster in 1944 and Associate Headmaster in 1950 and Headmaster in 1958 when Peter Gow dies (1886-1958). Norman Howard serves as Headmaster till he retires in 1977, Norman Howard was Headmaster and my RL teacher during the time I went to Gow. David W. Gow, Peter Gow's only son graduated from Gow in 1941 and then went to Yale. He begins teaching at Gow in 1947 and becomes Assistant Headmaster in 1952 and Associate Headmaster in 1958. In 1977 David W. Gow was named Headmaster and was very instrumental in the expansion of buildings at Gow, his insight has guaranteed the future of the Gow School. He retired in 1990 after 43 years of teaching at Gow and still lives in the family home on the school grounds.
